An introduction to playing Crazy Eights

The board gives you the information needed for the next action. Empty your hand by matching the active suit or the top card’s rank. Eights let you choose the next suit. Try the rule on the board, then read the next instruction. Each player starts with five cards from a standard 52-card deck. The starting discard is not an eight. Try the rule on the board, then read the next instruction.

Two-player free play with a local computer opponent. No draw-two stacking or reverse cards. A refreshed page starts a new round.

An idea for your next attempt

The example and rules describe the same game you can play above. After an eight, match the called suit or play another eight. The eight’s printed suit is not the active suit.

Understand the aim

Keep the goal in view while choosing a move. Empty your hand by matching the active suit or the top card’s rank. Eights let you choose the next suit. Try the rule on the board, then read the next instruction.

The order of play

  1. Each player starts with five cards from a standard 52-card deck. The starting discard is not an eight.
  2. Play one matching card. An eight is always playable; choose its suit using the suit selector before tapping the card.
  3. After an eight, match the called suit or play another eight. The eight’s printed suit is not the active suit.
  4. Draw one card at a time when needed. Drawing does not end your turn; keep drawing or play a legal card.
  5. The stock is not recycled. With no stock and no legal card, pass. Two consecutive passes end the round in a draw.
  6. The first empty hand wins. New round deals again.

Your inputs

Begin with the basic rule, then follow the result of your action. Tap a playable card. Set the suit selector before playing an eight. Draw and Pass have separate buttons. Start a new round when you are ready to try again.

See how the rules apply

Keep the goal in view while choosing a move. If 5♣ is on top, you can play another club, another five, or any eight. Calling hearts with an eight makes hearts the active suit.

A useful caution

Use the controls beside the game rather than guessing the rules. Do not assume that every eight keeps its printed suit. The called suit is shown beside the discard pile. Keep the goal in mind before your next move.

Clarifying the way this game works

When I start, what is the aim of Crazy Eights?

Empty your hand by matching the active suit or the top card’s rank. Eights let you choose the next suit. A new round resets the current game.

How do the controls work?

Tap a playable card. Set the suit selector before playing an eight. Draw and Pass have separate buttons. A new round resets the current game.

For this game, can you show an example?

If 5♣ is on top, you can play another club, another five, or any eight. Calling hearts with an eight makes hearts the active suit. The worked example offers another way to follow the rule.

When I start, which mistake should I avoid?

Do not assume that every eight keeps its printed suit. The called suit is shown beside the discard pile. The instructions above use these same rules.

On this page, what rules and limits are used here?

Two-player free play with a local computer opponent. No draw-two stacking or reverse cards. A refreshed page starts a new round. No download or player account is required.

For this game, how many people can play here?

You vs computer. This is local browser play, not internet matchmaking. A new round resets the current game.

For this game, why can I still play after drawing?

Drawing alone does not finish a turn here. Play a legal card, or continue drawing if needed. The controls work with mouse or touch.

On this page, can I pass while I have a matching card?

No. Pass is available only when the stock is empty and your hand contains no legal card. The instructions above use these same rules.

How do I choose the suit for an eight?

Use the suit selector first, then tap the eight. Use the labelled controls for your next action.

When I start, what happens when both players are blocked?

If the stock is empty and both players pass consecutively, the round is a draw. Keep the current game state in view while applying this rule.
